Seasons

We can fish year round here on the Peninsula but certain seasons are better for different things. Here is a basic guide of what you can expect when. Of course fishing is about exceptions, so just because May is not listed here as a Steelhead month, doesn't mean you can't catch a few.

This time of year is dominated by winter steelhead in the west end rivers. Although there are still some nice sea-runs in the salt water and some trout fishing in the lakes.

May - June

The lakes and streams have opened up for trout and there can be some excellent early season fishing. The cutthroat are mostly back in the salt by now and are ravenous from there spawning run. There can be some excellent salt water fishing this time of year, not just for cutthroat but also for feeder Chinook (black mouth).

July - August

Silvers have arrived on the beaches, cutthroat are still going strong, the high lakes open up for trout. This is also when we start to see some summer run steelhead and the summer salmon . Don't forget the resident trout in the streams. This is some of the most beautiful weather of the year and a great time to visit some of Port Townsend's music festivals.

September - October - November

The best Fly fishing of the year . Trout , steelhead , salmon, take your pick. Fish the rivers or the salt , its all great this time of year, and the weather stays decent at least until the end of Oct.

December

The trout in the sound are still going strong. The winter steelhead are just getting started. Get yourself a steelhead for Christmas!
